This Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) plant growth and development course is highly respected by the industry and is popular with both people wishing to pursue a career in horticulture and also keen gardeners who want to learn more.
The course provides learners with a solid theoretical grounding and offers an understanding behind the science of plants, such as how they function, nutrition, health, adaptations and various planting styles.
Learners will also develop an understanding of the horticultural industry and the vital role plants play in enhancing biodiversity.

Experienced lecturers from diverse backgrounds share their knowledge and skills to help you get to where you want to be.
The course takes place at the college’s Gelli Aur campus where students have access to the library which has a large stock of horticultural learning materials.
This qualification provides knowledge of the scientific principles which underpin horticultural practices as well as an understanding of the horticulture industry and its relevance to society and biodiversity.
There are 2 units covering 8 topics:
Unit 1
- Plant Science 1: provides underpinning knowledge of the plant, its structure and function.
- Plant Health: provides underpinning knowledge and understanding of the effect of a range of factors on plant health.
- Plant Nutrition: provides horticultural knowledge of plant nutrition and growing media.
- Plant Specification: provides horticultural knowledge to make recommendations for planting based on matching plant need and site requirements
Unit 2
- Plant Science II: provides an understanding of the range and role of plant adaptations.
- Planting Styles: provides horticultural knowledge of the factors involved in creating a wide range of different horticultural plantings.
- Horticulture and Society: allows learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of horticulture’s contribution to society, including social, environmental and economic.
- Biodiversity: provides an applied knowledge of the roles of plants in creating habitats to encourage biodiversity.
Learners who have completed this course can go onto:
RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture
Learners who have successfully completed the RHS level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture and the RHS level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development qualification will be awarded the RHS level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
There are also options to progress onto level 3.
Each unit will be assessed by a separate written examination, set and marked by the RHS. Examinations are offered twice a year in February and June.
There are no academic entry qualifications for this course but applicants should have some work experience in the industry or be experienced gardeners.
£360. All learners are required to pay the course fee prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
