The Agriculture Apprenticeship programme offers a comprehensive pathway from Level 2 to Level 4, combining hands-on experience with academic learning. Designed for learners aged 16 and above, this programme covers foundational agricultural skills, advanced practices, and management techniques. Apprentices will be employed, earning while learning, and will attend college on a day-release basis. Supported by a training adviser/assessor, learners will achieve industry-recognised qualifications and essential skills, preparing them for various roles within the agricultural sector.

What you will learn

The apprenticeship provides a blend of practical work, academic study, and professional development, ensuring a thorough understanding of agricultural practices. Learners will be assessed through coursework, assignments, and work-based observations. The programme includes Essential Skills Wales qualifications and offers progression opportunities to higher apprenticeships or further education. Training advisers/assessors provide regular support and liaise with employers to ensure timely completion of qualifications.

  • Level 2 graduates can progress to Level 3 Apprenticeships.
  • Level 3 graduates can progress to Level 4 Higher Apprenticeships or foundation degrees.
  • Level 4 graduates can pursue higher education courses or advanced roles within the agricultural sector, such as unit manager or assistant farm manager.
Level 2:

Units include: Monitoring and Maintaining Health and Safety, Maintain and Develop Personal Performance, Prepare and Cultivate Sites Ready for Planting Crops, Maintain the Healthy Growth of Crops, Maintain Site Biosecurity & Personal Hygiene, Prepare Feed and Water Supplies for Livestock, Maintain the Health and Welfare of Livestock during Birth, and many more.

  • Essential Skills Wales: Application of Number (Level 1), Communication (Level 1).
Level 3:

Units include: Maintain and Develop Personal Performance, Establish and Maintain Effective Working Relationship with Others, Prepare Outdoor Sites for the Introduction of Livestock, Monitor and Maintain Livestock on Outdoor Sites, Prepare for the Transport of Animals, Manage Your Own Resources, Promote, Monitor and Maintain Health, Safety and Security, Prepare and Monitor Cultivate Sites for Planting Crops, Establish, Monitor and Maintain Appropriate Conditions for Livestock, and more.

  • Essential Skills Wales: Application of Number (Level 2), Communication (Level 2).
Level 4:

City & Guilds Level 4 Diploma in Work-based Agricultural Business Management.

Units include: Monitor and Maintain the Brooding of Young Birds, Monitor and Maintain the Growth of Young Birds, Monitor and Maintain Soil Nutrition for Grassland and Forage Crops, Develop and Implement Plans for the Disposal of Waste, Prepare and Operate a Power Vehicle, Monitor and Maintain the Collection, Grading and Preparation of Eggs, and many more.

  • Essential Skills Wales: Application of Number, Communication, and Digital Literacy (Level 2).

Assessment methods include portfolio coursework, written and verbal questioning, work-based observations, and practical evidence. There are no traditional exams; all assessments are designed to reflect real-world scenarios.

Apprenticeships in Wales are fully funded for eligible learners. Additional costs may include optional textbooks and learning materials. Apprentices must be employed and fully supported by their employers throughout the programme. Professional membership fees are applicable and paid annually by the apprentice.

Applicants must be 16 or over and employed in the agricultural sector. Entry requirements are flexible, with initial interviews and basic skills screeners determining the appropriate level. Relevant qualifications or experience in agriculture are beneficial. Essential Skills Qualifications in Application of Number, Communication, and Digital Literacy are required if not previously attained. Both new and existing employees are eligible.
