“The Welsh language is one of the treasures of Wales. It is part of what defines us as people and as a nation” (Welsh Government). Do you want to be one of a million Welsh speakers by 2050? Do you want the thrill of being able to communicate in more than one language? Do you want enhanced employment opportunities? Do you like a challenge? Then, studying Welsh is definitely the right option for you! During this Welsh Second Language course you will encounter Welsh films and Welsh literature; you will undertake individual research; you will learn about the history of the language and acquire the language resources to enable you to communicate in a wide range of situations and contexts.
You will develop a range of transferable skills such as problem solving, intellectual flexibility, teamwork and creativity – all of which will make you highly employable and a desirable student for any university course.

What you will learn
You will be encouraged to use Welsh to communicate at every opportunity in order to develop your confidence and fluency.
You will have occasion to work collaboratively and individually, allowing you to explore themes and topics in depth and detail.
You will be given specific support and advice to help you with the accuracy of your work.
The course consists of six units as follows:
AS
- Unit 1 – Film and oracy
- Unit 2 – Non-examination assessment (portfolio of written work)
- Unit 3 – Use of language and poetry
AL
- Unit 4 – Drama and oracy
- Unit 5 – Welsh in society and translanguaging
- Unit 6 – Use of language and short stories
People with Welsh and bilingual skills are currently in high demand in Wales. Having an A Level in Welsh means that you have achieved a high proficiency in the language and, consequently, will make you very appealing to many employers in Wales. Welsh skills are particularly desirable in fields such as health and social care, media and film, local governance and education.
Should you wish to continue with your study of Welsh at degree level, there are a range of courses available allowing you to focus on your particular areas of interest, many of which come with grants and bursaries.
AS

A2
- Unit 4 – Oral exam – 25%
- Unit 5 – Written exam – 15%
- Unit 6 – Written exam – 20%
A minimum of six GCSEs at grades A*-C To include: GCSE Welsh at a B grade or above, GCSE Mathematics and English Language at a C grade or above.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
