AS/A Level Physics

A level Physics is an important qualification for many careers. It is a fascinating and stimulating area of study which continually challenges students and demands creative thinking. It allows you to appreciate how fundamental Science works and applications of Science in the wider world. It will develop your analytical, evaluative and synoptic skills.
You will also improve your practical skills, including the ability to plan and manipulate information and data. Furthermore, Physics will also teach and enhance many of your wider key skills such as application of number, I.C.T., problem solving and logical thinking.

What you will learn
You are encouraged to develop an enthusiasm and interest in physics through wider reading of books, magazines and internet sites and watching suggested “you tube” channels e.g Veritasium
Lessons are supported with demonstrations, video clips and group or individual practical work is regularly undertaken in a dedicated laboratory. Class sizes are typically around 14 students. Google Classroom is used to share digital resources and provide links for learners to extend their understanding beyond A level requirements.
You will have homework tasks to support your learning with detailed feedback on how to improve and in addition there are class tests to help assess your overall progress.
AS (Year1) course.
- PH1 -Motion, Energy and Matter (50% of AS and 20% of A Level)
- PH2 - Electricity and Light (50% of AS and 20% of A Level)
A2 (Year 2) course.
- PH3 - Oscillations and Nuclei (25% of A Level)
- PH4 - Fields and Physics of Sport (Option - chosen by tutor) (25% of A Level)
- PH5 - Practical Exam - Controlled Assessment. (10% of A Level)
A-level Physics is a traditional A-level subject and is identified as a key facilitating subject by the Russell Group Universities. There are many career paths that can be followed with a post-16 qualification in physics – communication, astronomy, transport and aerospace engineering, research and development, education, meteorology, environmental science, medicine and health, oceanographer, audio technician and many others.
Recent Coleg Sir Gar Physics students have progressed on to related fields in Higher Education as undergraduates for example to Exeter University to study Physics, to Dundee University to train as a commercial pilot, others are reading Physics with Astronomy at Nottingham University and Chemical and Materials Engineering at Bath University.
AS –
- Unit 1 written examination: 1.5 hours
- Unit 2 written examination: 1.5 hours
- (100% of AS and 40% of A Level)
A2–
- Unit 3 written examination: 2.25 hours
- Unit 4 written examination: 2 hours
- (50% of A Level)
- Unit 5 practical assessment: 2.5 hours over two sessions (10% of A Level)
A minimum of six GCSEs at grades A*-C To include: GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy and GCSE Physics or Double Science at grade B or above, GCSE English Language or Welsh (First Language) at a grade C or above.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
All STEM subjects can help you develop transferable skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, lateral thinking, and working as part of a team, which are highly sought-after qualities for any employer. They are academically rigorous, and also demonstrate an ability to manage heavy workloads, motivation and time keeping skills, and can lead to the highest-paying jobs.
Like all A Level subjects, STEM subjects are challenging, and you will need to be motivated and fully engaged to be successful.
