The City & Guilds/WJEC consortium GCE in health and social care and childcare will equip you with thorough and in-depth knowledge, understanding and skills related to the development and care of individuals throughout the life span from conception to later adulthood.
You have the opportunity to develop your understanding of influences on human growth, development, behaviour and well-being. You will also gain a detailed understanding of the social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs of people who use care and support services, and recognise that each individual has a unique blend of abilities and needs.

What you will learn
This specification includes contemporary issues in relation to the provision of an ethical and sustainable health and social care and childcare system in Wales. Active learning and personalisation are promoted by giving you opportunities to investigate care issues and topics of your own choice. Following a broad study of health and social care and childcare at AS and a choice of pathway at A2 provides you with an opportunity to develop depth of knowledge and understanding in either childcare or adult health and social care.
AS level AS Unit 1: Promoting health and well-being- will be assessed through a written examination.
- Two hours 20% of qualification

- A range of question types presented as a question-and-answer booklet
- All questions are compulsory
AS Unit 2: Supporting health, well-being and resilience in Wales is assessed through non-examination assessment and marked by your teacher, but externally moderated by WJEC.
- Approximately 30 hours
- 20% of qualification 100 marks
- A task that assesses your knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to how the health, well-being and resilience of individuals in Wales are supported through outcome-focused care.
A level Units 1 and 2, plus:
Childcare pathway
A2 Unit 3: Theoretical perspectives of children and young people’s development is assessed through a written examination.

- 30% of qualification 100 marks
- A range of question types presented as a question-and-answer booklet in two sections: - Section A (40 marks) relates to pre-release material - Section B (60 marks)
- All questions are compulsory
A2 Unit 4: Supporting the development, health, well-being and resilience of children and young people is assessed through non-examination assessment, marked by your teacher, externally moderated by WJEC.
- Approximately 40 hours 30% of qualification
- 100 marks
- A task that assesses your knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to the development, health, well-being and resilience of children and young people in Wales and requires you to produce an information resource for someone planning a future career in the childcare sector.
This specification provides a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for you even if you do not progress to further study in this subject. It provides a suitable foundation for the study of health and social care and childcare through a range of higher education courses, or into employment. You may also progress to other qualifications within the health and social care and childcare suite. The specification is not age-specific and, as such, provides opportunities for you to extend your life-long learning.

The specification includes contemporary issues in relation to the provision of an ethical and sustainable health and social care and childcare system in Wales, and will enable you to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities or continuing into related career choices.
You are asked to submit work for assessment at the end of each unit of study. Each specialist unit is graded. The work is subject to internal and external verification.
A minimum of six GCSEs at grades A*-C To include: GCSE Mathematics, English Language at a C grade or above.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
