Biology is a very popular AS subject and is listed as a ‘facilitating subject’ by the Russell Group universities. It is an academic subject that helps give you the widest options when applying to university due to the rigour and range of skills needed to study it successfully.
The course offers plenty of opportunity to enjoy the practical side of the subject. However, it is one of the more challenging academic subjects, requiring sustained commitment, attention to details and meeting of deadlines. Biology is a great choice for those wanting to pursue a career in health and clinical professions, such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, pharmacy, optometry, nursing, marine biology or forensic science.

What you will learn
A-level biology is a challenging, rewarding course that helps students develop skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career. It is a vital subject for anyone who is thinking of working in health care, pharmaceuticals, the food industry, environmental science and a wide range of other careers.
Many of our students go on to read a biologically-related degree, whilst others use their biology qualification to secure places to read law, computing, accounting, languages or humanities. So, whatever field you eventually work in, you will find Biology a very rewarding and challenging course which will develop many of the skills essential for a successful career.
AS units are assessed through two written examination papers (40% of full A level) and
A2 units assessed through two written examinations (50%) and a practical examination (10%).
A minimum of six GCSEs at grades A*-C To include: GCSE Mathematics (Intermediate/Higher Tier), GCSE Double/Triple Science at grade B or above, and GCSE English Language at a grade C or above.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
All STEM subjects can help you develop transferable skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, lateral thinking, and working as part of a team, which are highly sought-after qualities for any employer. They are academically rigorous, and also demonstrate an ability to manage heavy workloads, motivation and time keeping skills, and can lead to the highest-paying jobs.
