AS/A Level Art & Design

  • Graig Campus
AS - 1 Year / Full A Level - 2 Years

This art and design A level is a two year programme which focuses on developing a broad understanding of art, craft and design. The programme aims for every learner to develop their own unique voice using visual imagery, applying technical and contextual understanding confidently to realise their vision and creativity.

Learners are encouraged to explore individual interests and ideas over a range of genres through the development of sketchbooks to record their progress. Sketchbooks form an integral part of the course and learners are encouraged to develop their own creative styles for presentation, which may include producing handmade sketchbooks and integrating digital work.

Programme content includes techniques such as painting and drawing, illustration, collage, 3D techniques and printmaking. Developing ideas using direct observational drawing is a critical starting point for every project.

External opportunities and competitions are provided for all learners to push themselves outside their comfort zones and develop extra-curricular experiences and all learners are kept up-to-date on current exhibitions and events of interest, with trips organised throughout the year. AS art and design consists of a coursework portfolio and A-level art and design includes a self initiated portfolio module and an externally set controlled assessment.

The WJEC AS and A level specification in Art & Design has been designed to provide engaging and innovative creative learning experiences, where art, craft and design practice is meaningfully integrated with theoretical knowledge and understanding.

This unitized specification provides learners with opportunities to develop a broad foundation of critical, practical and theoretical skills at AS, which offers learners a holistic understanding of a range of practices and contexts in the visual arts, crafts and design fields, culminating in greater specialism and achievement at A level.

This course gives learners the opportunity to follow a program of study which extends experience and personal response as well as developing imagination and critical and reflective thinking. The ability to innovate, adapt and work independently, which underlies all aspects of the specification, is valued by higher education and employers alike.

Whichever title or combination of endorsed titles is followed, the specification encourages creativity, sustained investigation and analysis, experimentation, and design and making as a means of developing technical and expressive skills.
