The programme covers key horticultural practices, ensuring apprentices build a strong foundation in plant care, soil management, and sustainable growing and gardening techniques. 

This course is ideal for those looking to enhance their skills and progress within the industry and prepares individuals for a variety of roles within the sector, including Gardener, Landscaper, Nursery Worker, Fruit and Vegetable Production Worker, Greenkeeper, and Groundskeeper.

What you will learn

This programme combines practical, competency-based training with theoretical learning to develop essential skills in horticulture.

You will complete the following mandatory units, along with additional optional units:

  • Unit 201 – Monitoring and maintaining health and safety
  • Unit 202 – Maintaining and developing personal performance
  • Unit 203 – Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Unit 205 – Preparing ground for seeding and planting
  • Unit 206 – Establishing plants or seeds in soil
  • Unit 244 – Plant nomenclature, terminology, and identification

This apprenticeship provides a structured route into a career in horticulture. At Level 2, learners gain fundamental knowledge and skills, building a strong understanding of core principles in the industry. This qualification prepares individuals for a variety of roles within the sector, including Gardener, Landscaper, Nursery Worker, Fruit and Vegetable Production Worker, Greenkeeper, and Groundskeeper.

  • C&G combined qualification – Portfolio of evidence for each unit and independent assessments. 
  • Essential skills – Online/centre based assessments

There are no formal entry requirements for the Foundation Apprenticeship in Horticulture; however, experience in the sector would be beneficial. All apprentices must be in employment and fully supported by their employer. 

Candidates will need to complete Level 1 Essential Skills Qualifications in Communication and Application of Number. This apprenticeship is suitable for both new and existing employees.
