Introduction to Counselling Skills Level 2 (Level 2)

This course is a basic 10-week introduction for those who would like to learn counselling skills (listening and responding skills) in helping roles.  

The course enables you to find out more about counselling and help you decide whether you want to go on to train as a counsellor.

Many students find that this course can help improve existing professional roles and personal relationships, regardless of whether they go on to train further or not.

What you will learn

This course is offered on three different campuses: Pibwrlwyd (Carmarthen), Graig (Llanelli), Ammanford and online.    

The course runs for 10 weeks for three hours and is usually run in the evening (5pm to 8pm) or in the morning around 9.30am-12.30pm. Times may vary slightly.

The course covers seven main areas including recognising the limitations and boundaries of a helping role, communicating empathy, focusing on a helpee’s agenda, recognising the importance of self-awareness, giving and receiving feedback as well as a practical element of using listening and responding skills.

Students are recommended to obtain the CPCAB book that accompanies this course: Counselling skills and Studies (2nd Edition) by Dykes, Kopp and Postings.

This qualification does not lead directly to an employed role, however, it can enhance an existing voluntary or paid role or increase the general employability of those seeking to enter the job market.

Following this course, you can apply for the foundation degree in counselling which qualifies you to be a counsellor.

You will keep a portfolio of your learning including reflective written pieces and feedback from peers and tutor on your counselling skills practice.

There are no entry requirements for this course, however, the course involves experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities.  

As such, this course is not recommended for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological confusion.
