What you will learn

This course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of students enabling them to progress into the industry in their chosen craft.

The programme has been specifically developed for delivery in a modern training environment.  The course is delivered by highly qualified and experienced staff using modern facilities.

As part of the programme learners will also complete essential or basic literacy and numeracy development. Opportunities will also be provided to take GCSEs in Welsh, English and mathematics and for Welsh language development.

Learners choose a trade specialism in the construction sector and develop their knowledge, skills and understanding for that trade, as contained in the National Occupational Standards. Learners will spend the majority of their time on their one chosen trade unit.

Trade units:

  • Bricklaying
  • Site Carpentry
  • Painting and decorating
  • Solid Plastering
  • Electrotechnical systems and equipment installation
  • Plumbing and heating.

Learners will also complete three ‘core’ units which cover:

  • Employment
  • Employability skills
  • General construction practices.

The qualification is aimed at furthering learners’ skills prior to starting an apprenticeship.

On completion, the qualification will provide learners with the knowledge to progress on to:

  • Construction trades level 3 apprenticeship  – City & Guilds
  • Building Services Engineering level 3 apprenticeship  (Plumbing or Electrotechnical) - EAL
  • Employment in a construction-related area

The qualification provides sufficient knowledge for learners to progress into an apprenticeship within the sector in their choice of trade or other full-time construction related qualifications that will provide further development and understanding of trades within the construction industry.

To achieve this qualification, learners must complete:

  • one externally set, externally marked multiple-choice test.
  • one externally set, internally marked project covering their chosen trade area
  • one externally set, internally marked oral discussion

It is suitable for learners who have achieved the Foundation in Construction and Building Services Engineering qualification but do not yet have an employer to continue to an apprenticeship.

Students will be required to source and purchase their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which comprises safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat and Hi- Vis.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
