Photography is a captivating art form and a means of creative expression.
This course is a level four stand alone qualification that is basically the first year of our degree programmes. The course can be studied on a full time basis over one academic year, or part time over two years and will enable those students who are unable to commit to studying for a full BA Honours degree to have an understanding of, and learn the basic skills required in Photography.
Embracing a broad-based visual, conceptual and technical approach that reflects the developments and trends of twenty-first century photographic practice. Course content fully integrates modern digital and analogue technologies with traditional working practices.
Students leave with a portfolio demonstrating personal identity, crucial to securing vocational success and employment, with transferable, specialist, practical skills upon which to base the next phase of their career development.

What you will learn
Well resourced with a range of professional cameras, studio and location lighting for contemporary photography, including dedicated computer resources with industry standard software for professional digital darkroom work, creative image processing and also traditional darkroom with analogue methods of working to reflect renewed interest in silver photography.
Students will have opportunities to explore expressive image making for art practice, whilst also being conscious of the broader potential for a visually orientated society of multimedia consumers, as well as professional photography practice for the freelance and creative industries. A wide breadth of photographic approaches offers opportunities to work in documentary, fashion, editorial and fine art photography, thereby engendering vocational potentials and sustainable employability.
A skills based year delivered through a series of workshops, including Practical and Editorial Photography, Developing Visual Language, Visualisation: Concept & Process, Creative Digital Practice (used within photography), Learning in the Digital Era and a Creative Project.
On the successful completion of the Certificate of Higher Education, students can progress to level 5 of the full degree if chosen to do so.
Upon completing the full BA (Hons) Degree (years 2 & 3) students often take this forward, with the career prospects of becoming a: Fine Art Photographer, Fashion Photographer, Documentary Photographer, Photojournalist, Advertising Photographer, Stills Photographer for film & television, Wildlife / Landscape Photographer, Teacher/Lecturer, Postgraduate study (MA, PhD).
Recent graduates have been recognised in a number of high profile awards, including BAFTA Cymru, Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Award, The World Photography Organisation, The Printspace Trajectory Award, and The Association of Photographers. These have also been recognised for commissions by The Senedd, The National Museum of Wales / The National Portrait Gallery, and Ffotogallery, amongst many other successes.
Assessment is ongoing through workshop plenary sessions, critiques, formative and summative assessment with aural and written feedback.
Tariff score points accepted: A minimum of 96 points or equivalent portfolio ability for mature applicants.

There is no additional Studio fee. However, it is likely that you will incur additional costs for specialist materials, printing and for course related excursions.
