What you will learn

You will explore all curriculum areas in art and design before choosing which specialist pathway suits your personal interests. You will also develop skills working with a variety of materials and processes which will help you generate and develop ideas and outcomes.

Your studies will be supported by our contextual studies lectures. This exciting element of the course helps to grow your confidence in creative and critical thinking, personal reflection and subject knowledge of historical and contemporary practices.

The programme is delivered five days a week for 35 weeks and is free of tuition fees.

The programme is split into three stages:

Stage One: You attend a range of workshops to introduce you to processes and ways of working.

Stage Two: You select and follow your chosen specialist pathway; to support you to build a portfolio appropriate to your course of study at higher education or employment.

Stage Three: You stay within your chosen specialist pathway but the emphasis is on ambition, individuality and independence. You will propose and develop your end of year exhibition.

You will be taught by degree level tutors and subject specialists, most of whom have their own practice and can share their experiences with you. We will help you to build a subject-specific portfolio and using specialist facilities will introduce you to ways of working in preparation for studying a degree or going on to employment.

Many of our students progress to universities throughout the UK or choose direct progression onto degree programmes at Carmarthen School of Art, for which you will be eligible for an internal progression bursary of £1000.

You must pass all criteria in each stage to move on to subsequent stages.

Units are assessed internally. You will also create a final major project which is externally moderated by WJEC, the result of which will give a final diploma grade of distinction, merit or pass.

All applicants will need to bring a portfolio of art and design work to their interview. Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview.
