What you will learn
A central element of the course is problem solving by working through fun tasks, taking risks and developing new ideas. Stimulating and demanding projects will challenge you to think about how and why you make art work.
Studio and library discussions with your tutors and peers will give you a chance to look at the work of other artists and designers, which in turn will give you the confidence to talk about your own work.
This course consists of eight units which cover a variety of art, design and craft subjects, including 2D, 3D and time-based work, research, contextual awareness, creative development skills and progression skills.
This course also includes Essential Skills and employability Skills.
You will have plenty of support in finding new ways to research and investigate and all your experiences on the course will help you discover your creative strengths.
Successful completion of the course will enable you to progress to higher-level courses such as the level three Art & Design programme and the course will provide you with the skills which can lead to training in a wide variety of occupations.
All units are internally assessed and internally verified with the exception of the final major project, which is externally moderated by the University of the Arts London (UAL) Awarding Body.
All unit assessment is of the student’s portfolio work.
This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of Welsh and English.
All applicants will need to bring a portfolio of art, craft, and design work to their interview. Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview.
An applicant for the level two course will need to have four GCSEs at grades A* - D with two C grades, one being either English/Welsh (first language) or maths. Or successful completion of a level one vocational qualification in a relevant subject.
English and maths are an integral part of the course. Students who do not yet have the necessary grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills depending on prior GCSE grades.
There is a £150 studio fee for this course which will provide basic materials for you to develop practical work within our workshop and studio facilities.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
