Skills For Working Life in Land-based Studies (Animal and Equine) - Entry 3 Diploma (College Course)

This course will allow you to develop a wide range of skills, from being able to communicate with others and work safely to being able to bridle and saddle a horse. The course will include working directly within the animal care centre and equine yard that are on-site. This course is mostly practical but you will be working in a classroom to complete your portfolio.

What you will learn

You will work closely with your course tutors to complete the course. You will be in college 3 days a week, with practical work most days. This course will have you working directly with a wide range of animals onsite, including birds, goats, reptiles, guinea pigs, rabbits, fish and horses. Lessons will be a mixture of practical and classroom work.

  • Show Visitors Around a Small Animal Enterprise
  • Recognise Signs of Health in a Horse
  • Fit and Remove a Rug
  • Clean Horse Tack
  • Catch and Lead a Horse
  • Saddle and Bridle a Horse
  • Recognise a Healthy Farm Animal
  • Clean Farm Animal Housing 
  • Practical Learning Sessions

You will have the opportunity to undertake a range of skills such as:

  • Essential Skills Welsh Communication
  • Essential Skills Wales Application of Number
  • GCSE or Agored English and Mathematics
     

Completion of the Entry 3 in animal care will enable you to progress onto the level 1 animal care course at the college should you pass entry 3 and carry out a successful interview.  It would also allow you to progress onto other level 1 courses within the college.

You will undertake mostly practical tasks in order to show how your understanding of what you have learnt has progressed. You will also be required to fill out a portfolio of information in order to obtain your qualification. Practical tasks will be undertaken in the animal care centre on-site and the equine yard on-site.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment. 

You will need to provide your own stationary and may also be required to pay for educational visits that the department organises. 

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory for you to undertake the practical elements of the course. You will have to provide overalls, a scrub top, wellingtons or boots, a waterproof jacket and potentially waterproof trousers. 

Students will be required to have adequate equipment for working outside in all weathers.

Students will also be required to have the usual equipment for working in a classroom environment.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery, and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
