British Horse Society Stage 2 Foundation Groom Care and Lunge (Level 2)

Learners will attend college one day a week, every Tuesday throughout the academic year. The course aims to develop the learner’s theoretical knowledge, practical horsemanship skills and assessment technique in preparation for the British Horse Society Qualification Stage 2 Care and lunge exam. The college day will consist of classroom theory based sessions followed by practical sessions on the college yard using college horses and college equine facilities.
This qualification will expand on knowledge gained in the BHS Stage 1 Care qualification with new topic areas such as; an Introduction to Anatomy, Fitness and Presentation and lungeing horses under supervision.

What you will learn
British Horse Society exams are recognised internationally as an industry standard qualification. Learners will study at Coleg Sir Gâr, a British Horse Society approved examination centre. College facilities include an indoor school, outdoor menage and stables accommodation for approximately 14 horses. This course will be taught by British Horse Society qualified lecturers.

- Know about the roles, rights and responsibilities of a Groom
- Feeding & Watering
- Horse Health & Anatomy
- Grassland Care & Stable design
- Lunging a horse under supervision
- Shoeing, Clipping & Trimming
- Grooming, plaiting and fitting equipment
- Fittening for work
Individuals will achieve a BHS Foundation groom qualification which can lead to professional roles such as an Assistant Groom or Yard Assistant or entry onto the BHSQ Stage 3 Horse Care course/Level 3 Equine Apprenticeship at Coleg Sir Gâr.
Learners will undertake a formal practical/practical oral BHS examination at the end of their course, by external BHS examiners. The BHSQ Stage 2 Horse Knowledge and Care examination will be undertaken at Coleg Sir Gâr Pibwrlwyd These learners will be continually assessed in college by college qualified staff by means of coursework, assignments, practical work, oral discussions and observations.
- There is a part time course fee for this course in Fee band P £759
- Candidates will also require British Horse Society Gold Membership, this can be purchased directly with the BHS, this is an annual subscription allowing individuals to participate in BHS exams.
- You will need to provide your own PPE for the practical elements including suitable safe footwear, gloves and a riding hat up to the current safety standards.
