This qualification is suitable for anyone who needs additional support to develop their finance or business skills. This qualification can offer a route into employment, support students in their existing work, or help students to pursue further study with AAT.
This could be young people who have just left school as well as adults returning to work after a break or for anyone wishing to change career. It is also ideal for self-employed people who wish to manage their own accounts. The course is open to those who are working and those who are not currently in employment.

What you will learn
This short course is ideal for anyone who wishes to develop an understanding of the basics of manual bookkeeping. The purpose of this short course is to allow students with different experiences and end goals to engage with AAT and achieve their potential.
This unit introduces the student to the role of the bookkeeper and simple bookkeeping techniques. It covers the buying and selling process and the common documents used. On completion of this qualification students will be able to:
- Understand the role of the bookkeeper
- Process customer and supplier transactions
- Process receipts and payments
The AAT Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping covers a range of skills and relevant supporting knowledge to complete one mandatory unit:
- Bookkeeping Fundamentals
This unit is assessed individually in an end-of-qualification assessment.
The skills developed by studying this qualification will give students a solid base from which to seek employment with greater confidence or enable them to progress to the next level of learning.
This qualification can lead to employment in junior or supporting administrative roles in companies, such as:
- a trainee bookkeeper
- a billing/payments administrator/coordinator
- an accounts administrator
- an accounts junior
- an assistant cashier
The skills developed in this qualification may also underpin those developed further in the following courses: Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping and the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting.
The assessment for this qualification is computer based with a time restriction.
Students will be presented with a range of question types and formats in the assessment. These may include multiple-choice questions, numeric gap-fill questions, or question tools that replicate workplace activities.
AAT does not set any prerequisites for the study of the AAT Award in Bookkeeping. However, for the best chance of success, we recommend that students begin their studies with a good standard of English and Maths.
