This course is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or finance. It may also support career progression for those already in employment by formally recognising their skills in manual bookkeeping and is ideal for self-employed people who wish to manage their own accounts.
The purpose of the course is to offer grounding in the core accounting knowledge and skills needed to progress either to employment or to further study.
This qualification is suitable for young people who have just left school as well as adults returning to work after a break or anyone wishing to change career. The course is open to those who are working and those who are not currently in employment.
Course fees are applicable which cover tuition and initial exam sitting - price available on request.

What you will learn
Students completing this qualification will develop practical accountancy skills in the double-entry bookkeeping system and in using associated documents and processes. Students will be able to check transactions for accuracy, make entries in appropriate books and ledgers, and calculate sales invoices and credit notes.
This course is delivered using a blended learning approach which combines face-to-face and online activities in a seamless and complementary flow of learning.
AAT will require all students to register with the professional body. Restrictions to membership may apply. More information is available at www.aat.org.uk.
The AAT Certificate in Bookkeeping covers a range of skills and relevant supporting knowledge to complete two mandatory units:
- Introduction to Bookkeeping
- Principles of Bookkeeping Controls
Assessments are computer based and time restricted.
The accountancy skills developed by studying this qualification will enable students to seek employment with confidence and/or to progress to the next level of learning.
The finance, accountancy, business and communications skills developed in the AAT Certificate in Bookkeeping can lead to employment as:
- Clerical Assistant
- Trainee Bookkeeper
- Accounts Clerk
- Finance Assistant
- Accounts Administrator
The accountancy and finance knowledge developed in this qualification will enable students to progress onto either the AAT Certificate in Booking or the Diploma in Accounting (level 3) qualifications.
Under the Free Courses for Jobs initiative, you might be eligible for a fully funded Level 3 course. Alternatively, you can apply for an advanced learner loan to cover the cost of your Level 3 study. Please ask a member of college staff for more information.
Assessments in this qualification are computer based and time restricted.
Students will be presented with a range of question types and formats in the assessment. These may include multiple-choice questions, extended written responses, numeric gap-fill questions, or question tools that replicate workplace activities, such as making entries in a journal.
AAT does not set any prerequisites for the study of the AAT Certificate in Bookkeeping. However, for the best chance of success, we recommend that students begin their studies with a good standard of English and Maths.
Students will be required to pay for exams if multiple resits are necessary.
Students need to provide their own stationery and textbooks (if required). Additional costs may be incurred if the department arranges educational visits.
