Barbering is a profession that involves cutting, styling, grooming, and maintaining hair and facial hair for men. Barbers provide a range of services, including haircuts, shaves, beard trims and hair styling.
This level two qualification is designed for those who have an ambition for a career in the barbering industry.
It covers all the basic barbering treatments and will provide you with a good foundation from which you could progress to further courses. Learning in the college’s commercial training salon, you will develop the essential skills needed for your career path as a barber.
During the course you will develop practical expertise and essential knowledge of the industry.
This course provides you with the practical opportunities allowing you to complete your assignments and put your skills into practice in a real barbering salon environment.
Throughout this course, you will be assessed through practical skills tests and written assignments that will run alongside the modules you are studying.

What you will learn
The college runs a commercial training salon which is open to the public and provides you with a real working environment, allowing you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry.
There is also an emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development.
You will be part of a thriving programme of activities including trips and events as well as taking part in national competitions which can lead to international competition work.
This is a part-time course which will include working one night a week in the college salon.
This course consists of mandatory units delivered over one year part time:
- Client consultation for hair services
- Cut men’s hair
- Cut facial hair
- Follow health & Safety practice in the salon
This course focuses on providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a higher level course, apprenticeship but ultimately employment as a junior barber.
Undertaking the right training at the start of your career is a great long-term investment in your career prospects.
Career opportunities will allow you to progress either to the level three diploma course or into commercial salons, barbers or self-employment.
As part of this programme the following methods of assessment will be used:
- Practical examination
- Continuous assessments
- Portfolio of evidence
- Written assignments & Exams
Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview, however, a positive attitude to learning a vocational skill is required.
We recommend a minimum of four GCSEs grades at A* to D with two C grades, one being either English/Welsh (first language) or maths. Or we accept successful completion of a level one vocational qualification in a relevant subject. We will also consider previous qualifications and experience.
This part time course fee is currently £275.
You will have access to a range of equipment and resources at college but in addition, a kit and a uniform will need to be purchased. This information will be given prior to your start date and can be advised at interview.
Various trips are organised throughout the academic year relating to the hair industry, of which you will be required to pay a contribution towards.
