Hairdressing is a popular and rewarding career choice for individuals who have a passion for hairstyling and helping clients.

This level one qualification offers a foot into the door of starting a hairdressing career and is designed to create strong foundations for those who have an ambition for a career in the hairdressing industry.

It covers basic hairdressing services from which you could progress to further courses. Learning in the college’s commercial training salon, you will develop the essential skills required to achieve your career path as a hairdresser. 

During the course you will develop practical expertise and essential knowledge of the industry. This course provides you with the practical opportunities allowing you to put your skills into practice in a real hairdressing salon environment. 

Throughout this course, you will be assessed through practical skills tests and written assignments/exams that will run alongside the modules you are studying.

What you will learn

Our salons are specifically designed for training purposes and have all the latest equipment and resources. Candidates will need to be highly motivated and be willing to work as part of a team. As a department we are keen to encourage students to reach their full potential by participating in both in- house and national competitions. 

We also run enrichment days to include, affinage training, ear piercing, hair extensions and theatrical make-up. You will also have the opportunity to attend trade shows, seminars, workshops as well as organised sector related trips. 

The college runs a commercial training salon which is open to the public and provides a real working environment, allowing you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry. There is also an emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development. 

You will be part of a thriving programme of activities including trips and events as well as taking part in national competitions which can lead to international competition work. 

You learn with your assessor through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments. You’ll have access to a realistic hairdressing environment where you’ll practise and demonstrate your skills.

The course units are listed in the programme description. Each unit contains an element of both theory and practical work. There will also be integrated numeracy and literacy work within the units as learners will be expected to carry out an essential skill in both these topics.

If you pursue a career in hairdressing you may gain employment through any of the following routes:

Practical work will be assessed using observation methods and product evidence. The theory work will be assessed with assignments and  online multiple-choice exams. 

Three GCSE grades at A* to G in either English/Welsh (first language) or maths or equivalent. Candidates must attend an interview.

All learners will follow a skills pathway in which they will develop their literacy and numeracy skills for employment. Students who do not yet have the necessary GCSE grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills qualifications depending on prior GCSE grades.
