Beauty therapy in an expansive and professional industry which encompasses various industries such as beauty salons, hotels, spas and cruise ships.
This level two qualification is designed for those who want to gain a career in the beauty therapy industry.
It covers all the basic beauty therapy treatments and will provide you with a good base from which you could progress to other courses.
Learning in the college’s training salon, you will develop the essential skills needed for your career path as a beautician.
During the course you will be supported to develop practical expertise and essential knowledge of the industry.
This course provides you with practical opportunities allowing you to complete your assignments and put your skills into practice in a real beauty salon environment.
Throughout this course, you will be assessed through practical skills tests and written assignments that will run alongside the modules you are studying.
This level two course includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist including facial skincare, enhancement of eyebrows and eyelashes, waxing services, manicure, pedicure, effectiveness at work, health and safety and promoting additional products and services to clients.
As part of the course, you are required to undertake work experience that will allow you to use the transferable skills that you will learn at college.

What you will learn
The college runs a working salon which is open to the public. This provides you with a real working environment and allows you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry.
There is an emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development.
Students have a thriving programme of activities, trips and events that include taking part in national competitions with progression to international competitions.
This qualification is based on the beauty therapy national occupational standards and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional bodies as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior beauty therapist.
This is a full-time course and you will be expected to work in the college’s commercial salon one night a week.
The course consists of mandatory units delivered over one year:
- Provide facial skin care treatment
- Carry out waxing services
- Enhance the appearance of eyebrow and lashes
- Manicure services
- Pedicure services
- Make-up services
- Ensure own actions reduce risks to health and safety
- Promote additional products or services to clients
- Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
- Fulfil salon reception duties
Alongside your beauty qualification, you will be given the opportunity to improve your grades by either taking GCSE resits or Essential Skills in both literacy and numeracy, which will enable you to progress on to further courses and develop your confidence and career opportunities.
This course focuses on providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a higher level, apprenticeships and ultimately employment as a junior therapist.
Undertaking the right training at the start of your career can be a great long-term investment in your career prospects.
Career opportunities will allow you to progress either to a level three course or into commercial salons, television, film, theatre and media, cruise liners, and self-employment such as mobile or home-based settings.
As part of this programme the following methods of assessment will be used:
- Practical examination
- Continuous assessments
- Portfolio of evidence
- Written assessments
This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of Welsh and English.
Suitability for this course will be assessed at the interview however a positive attitude to learning a vocational skill is required.
A minimum of four GCSE grades at A* to D with two C grades, one being either English/Welsh (first language) or maths.
Or successful completion of a level one vocational qualification in a relevant subject.
English and maths are an integral part of the course and students who do not yet have the necessary grades at C or above will receive additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills, depending on your prior GCSE grades.
