Hairdressing Level 1 (College Course)

Hairdressing allows you to express your creativity through various hairstyling techniques, colour combinations, and hair treatments.

This level one qualification is an exciting taster which will give you an insight into the world of the hair industry. 

Learning in the college’s commercial training salon, you will develop the essential basic skills needed for your career path as a hairdresser. 

This course provides you with the practical opportunities allowing you to complete your assignments and put your skills into practice in a real hair salon environment. 

Throughout this course, you will be assessed through practical skills tests and written assignments that will run alongside the modules you are studying.

As part of the course, you are required to undertake work experience that will allow you to use the transferable skills that you will learn at the college. 

This course is ideal for school leavers interested in a career as a hairdresser and the qualification provides a solid access to understanding what is involved in the hair sector.

What you will learn

The college runs a commercial salon which is open to the public, providing you with a real working environment and allowing you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry. 

During the year, you will also complete an additional Welsh customer service qualification to equip you with the vital skills required for working in the industry in Wales.

We will also support you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development. 

By studying this course, you will have the opportunity to be part of a thriving programme of activities which involve visits and events that include taking part in national competitions which have the potential to progress to international competitions. 

This accredited course consists of six units studied over one year, which cover subjects such as:

  • Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
  • Blow-dry hair
  • Shampoo and conditioning hair
  • Assist with hair colouring and lightening services

Alongside your hair qualification, you will be given the opportunity to improve your grades by either taking GCSE resits or Essential Skills in both literacy and numeracy, which will enable you to progress on to further courses and develop your confidence and career prospects.

This course focuses on providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to higher level courses, apprenticeships and ultimately employment. 

Undertaking the right training at the start of your career is a great long-term investment in your career prospects. 

Progression to level two and level three courses are supported as are career prospects that involve commercial salons, television, film, theatre and media, cruise liners, and self-employment as well as home or mobile-based settings.

You are asked to submit work for assessment at the end of each unit of study. Each specialist unit is graded. The work is subject to internal and external verification.

This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of English only.

Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview and through a practical skills test however a positive attitude to learning a vocational skill is required. 

You will need to have a minimum of two GCSE grades at A* to G in English or Welsh (first language). Maths and science are an advantage. 

English and maths are an integral part of the course and students who do not yet have the necessary grades at grade C or above will receive additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills depending on prior GCSE grades.

As part of the course, you will have access to a range of equipment and resources and in addition, consumable products and a uniform will need to be purchased. This information will be explained prior to your start date.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
