Beauty Therapy Level 3 (College Course)

This level three vocational qualification is designed to further develop your beauty skills and techniques gained at level two. 

You will be supported to build your confidence and creativity in a real salon environment working on clients as well as learning how to advise on beauty treatments and products. 

This one-year full time course is a high-level qualification which will expand on your existing beauty skills and give you the advanced practical beauty skills provided for further career progression in the beauty industry. 

This intense course combines theory and hands-on experience where you will be assessed on completing practical skills tests and written assignments, which will run alongside the modules you are studying. You will also have the opportunity to undertake an external placement, which will enhance your employability prospects even further. 

A focus on excellent customer care and good communication will help develop you for a career in beauty, with our expert team supporting you to improve or develop your skills to help you move up the ladder in the beauty business or associated industries.

What you will learn

We have a working salon open to the public,  which will provide you with a real working environment and allow you to gain a deeper understanding of working in the industry. 

There is an emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development. 

Students have a thriving programme of activities, trips and events that include taking part in National and progressing if successful to International competitions. 

This qualification is based on the beauty therapy national occupational standards and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional bodies as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a senior beauty therapist.

This is a full-time course and you will be expected to work in the college’s commercial salon one night a week.

This course consists of mandatory and optional units delivered over one year. 

Units include:

  • Body electrical treatments
  • Body massage treatments
  • Stone therapy treatments
  • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • Provide facial electrical treatments

Alongside your beauty qualification, you will be given the opportunity to improve your grades by either taking GCSE resits or Essential skills in both literacy and numeracy, which will enable you to progress on to further courses and develop your confidence.

After successfully completing the course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto employment within a salon, spa and mobile work.

When you have completed this course you may even wish to apply for working on cruise ships, carrying out beauty treatments alongside travelling the world. There are also other exciting opportunities to work in various salons and spa chains across the world within countries as far as Dubai and Bermuda.

Alternatively, you may wish to progress onto a professional course in salon management, or even a BA honours degree, to gain specialised training in areas such as semi-permanent micropigmentation, microblading, dermaplaning, microneedling, peels, laser and non-invasive liposuction and many more. Undertaking the right training at the start of your career can be a great long-term investment in your career prospects.

  • Practical examination
  • Continuous assessments
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Written assessments 

Suitability for this course will also be assessed and discussed at interview.

You will need a level two qualification in a relevant subject as well as a a positive attitude to learning a vocational skill.

A minimum of five GCSEs at grades A* to C, which include either English language or Welsh (first language) and maths.

English and maths are an integral part of the course.  Students who do not yet have the necessary grades at C or above will receive additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills, depending on prior GCSE grades.

You will have access to a range of equipment and resources. In addition, consumable products and a uniform will need to be purchased. This information will be given prior to your start date.

Learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits relating to your course.
