Sport and exercise scientists continue to be a growing presence in the world of sport, and as we look to the future, all the signs suggest that their influence in sport will increase. This course aims to prepare you for further study opportunities and provides a stepping stone to higher education and/or employment.
This course is ideal for those learners who wish to learn more about analysing sports performance and what it takes to aspire towards peak performance. The course will develop your skills and knowledge within the field, alongside developing essential skills such as literacy, numeracy and digital literacy.
You will have access to industry standard facilities and equipment such as our 4G pitch, sports hall, fitness gym, analysis suite and performance hub. You will gain first-hand experience with our ‘Gold Standard’ equipment, boasting Peak Power Wattbikes, Body Mass Analyser, Smartspeed sensors and breath-by-breath VO2max analysis. You are also encouraged to engage in our Sports Academies that aim to develop athletes and players in a range of sports including our Elite Performer Programme (EPP).
Students will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course, completing a NCFE Level 3 Diploma (540) in Sport and Physical Activity (Sport & Exercise Science) in year one and progress onto a NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Sport & Exercise Science) in year two.

What you will learn
Areas of study include functional anatomy, applied physiology and psychology, sports biomechanics, specialised fitness training, nutrition, sports massage and sports injuries. You will also develop transferable interpersonal skills such as working with others, problem solving, autonomous learning and critical thinking skills. Learners will also develop skills in organisation, personal progression planning and research at an appropriate level.
Throughout the course you will also further develop your numeracy, literacy and digital literacy skills via our online Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) along with an opportunity to gain hands on experience with our ‘Gold Standard’ sports science equipment in our Performance Hub.
The 18 units course combines theory with practical methods of learning. 1080 GLH is equivalent in size to three A-levels.
Year 1:
- U1: Exercise, health and lifestyle *
- U2: Preparing for a career in sport and physical activity *
- U3: Principles of anatomy and physiology *
- U5: Biomechanics
- U6: Fitness testing for sport and exercise
- U9: Psychology for sports performance
- U11: Practical team sports
- U13: The physiology of fitness
- U15: Fitness training and programming

Year 2:
- U4: Applied exercise physiology
- U7: Laboratory and field-based experiment methods
- U8: Research project in sport and exercise sciences
- U10: Applied sports psychology

- U26: Sport and exercise massage
- U30: Work experience in sport
Successful completion of the course can lead to opportunities within the sport, leisure and health sector including employment in leisure centres, fitness gyms, governing bodies as well as relevant Higher Education courses at university leading to the following professions; Sport Scientist, Sports Therapist, Sport & Exercise Psychologist, Performance Nutritionist, Sports Biomechanists, Clinical Exercise Physiologist, GP Referral Exercise Consultant, Strength & Conditioning Coach to name a few.
Assessment is 100% internally assessed written assignments via practical assessments, presentations, logbooks, use of video evidence, open book tests, leaflets/brochures, etc. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction, with an overall grade eg P, M, or D awarded on completion.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 including either English language or Welsh (firsr language), maths and Science. A GCSE in Physical Education is beneficial, but not essential.
Progressions from level two sport with merit profile will be accepted. Having a strong interest and active involvement in sport is beneficial. All learners are assessed on an individual basis via an interview.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and purchase the college sports kit to use in practical activities and college trips.
