Sport, fitness and personal training is an ideal career to help motivate people to exercise effectively and enjoy the results that brings. 

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport, Fitness and Personal Training is an industry recognised qualification (CIMSPA/REPS). It has a primary focus on progression to employment as a personal trainer and supports learners in setting up their own personal training and exercise instruction business.

Learners will also have the skills and knowledge needed to provide training sessions and training programmes for clients to match their specific needs. Learners will gain additional knowledge and expertise that allows them to provide other sport- or fitness-related services to the clients they personally train such as sports massage and fitness testing.

You will have access to industry standard facilities and equipment such as our 4G pitch, sports hall, fitness gym, analysis suite and performance hub. You are also encouraged to engage in our Sports Academies that aim to develop athletes and players in a range of sports.

What you will learn

Areas of study include Fitness Skills Development, Personal Trainer Skills Development, Nutrition for Physical Performance and Functional Sports Massage.

You will develop the following skills:

  • Cognitive and problem-solving skills: using critical thinking, approaching non-routine problems applying creative solutions.
  • Interpersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation.
  • Intrapersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.

The primary focus is on progression to employment as a personal trainer and supports learners in setting up their own personal training and exercise instruction business.Learners can progress from this qualification to higher-education degree programmes, such as a BA (Hons) in Health and Fitness and a BSc (Hons) in Diet, Fitness and Wellbeing.

Alternatively, learners can progress to a Level 4 medical referral qualification, such as a Diploma in Exercise Referral.

All assessments are designed and assessed internally, with external sampling taking place on request.

Each unit is assessed to reach a pass, merit or distinction profile. Students must meet specific assessment criteria in order to achieve each mark.

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 including either English Language or Welsh (1st Language) and Maths. GCSE Physical Education is beneficial, but not essential.

Progressions from Level 2 Sport with MM profile are accepted. Having a strong interest and active involvement in fitness and exercise is also beneficial. All learners are assessed on an individual basis via an interview.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
