A career in sports massage can be an exciting and rewarding choice for individuals who are passionate about sports, wellness, and helping others. Sports massage therapists work with athletes and active individuals to help prevent injuries, enhance performance, and aid in the recovery process.

This course is a technical level qualification aimed at developing the knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career as a sports massage therapist.

It is a very popular course and gives you the knowledge and skills required to provide sports massage therapy to a range of clients who have dysfunctional tissue, without acute/post acute injuries or underlying pathological conditions. 

Throughout the qualification, you will develop treatment planning and assessment techniques as well as your technical skills. There will also be the opportunity to develop your research and evaluation skills whilst studying.

What you will learn

The content of this qualification comprises all the required elements needed to work effectively and efficiently as a sports massage therapist. This includes anatomy and physiology, professional practice, an understanding of the principles of health and fitness and how to provide sports massage treatments. The level three sports massage therapist will be able to work safely and effectively on dysfunctional tissue in a range of contexts, to include pre-event, post event, intra-event and for maintenance purposes.

The college runs a commercial training suite which is open to the public and will provide you with a real working environment. 

We are fortunate to have strong links with local and national industry specialists and you will be taught by our industry-experienced staff. 

We also have visiting speakers from the industry that provide students with enrichment opportunities in workshop seminars. 

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete. You will attend college for one evening per week  from 6pm to 9pm.

  • USP41: Anatomy and physiology for sports massage 
  • USP42: Principles of health and fitness 
  • USP43: Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction 
  • USP44: Professional practice in sports massage 
  • USP45: Sports massage treatments

This qualification is designed to lead to employment as a sports massage therapist. 

You will be involved in a thriving programme of activities and given an insight into career prospects within the industry, which are gained through trips and events. 

Upon successful completion of this course, you could progress on to a higher level course such as the level four certificate in sports massage therapy.

As part of this programme the following methods of assessment will be used: 

  • USP41: A&P External Examination
  • Continuous assessments 
  • e-portfolio of evidence 
  • Written assignments
  • Practical Assessments

There are no formal entry requirements, suitability for this course will be assessed at interview; however a positive attitude to learning a vocational skill is required and you must be keen to work with the public and have a professional attitude.

Band O.

You will have access to a range of equipment and resources but in addition, consumable products and a uniform will need to be purchased. This information will be given prior to your start date and can be discussed at interview.
