BSc Rugby Coaching & Performance (BSc)

Sport is one of the most dynamic areas of Coleg Sir Gâr and we are proud to offer exciting, innovative degree programmes in sport.

The one year top-up BSc in Rugby Coaching and Performance is designed for students who have already achieved a Foundation Degree or 240 credits in a related discipline. This programme is designed to ensure a current and academically rigorous learning experience that meets the needs of local industry.

The programme has strong links with elite professional teams such as the Scarlets and semi professional teams like Llandovery, Carmarthen Quinns and Llanelli where students have the opportunity to gain industry experience at the highest level.

The degree also benefits from community links built up within the department over many years, placing students in local schools and with WRU rugby development officers which provide an insight into potential employment routes.

Uniquely the course is based at UWTSD Carmarthen and delivered by Coleg Sir Gâr so you will be both students of UWTSD and Coleg Sir Gâr.

What you will learn

Areas of study include rugby coaching, rugby analysis and strength and conditioning. You will also develop transferable interpersonal skills such as advanced research skills, problem solving, autonomous learning and critical thinking skills in preparation for a career in rugby and sport. The programme also has a work based learning element so students can gain vital experience in their area of interest.

The area benefits from excellent facilities including a state of the art sports laboratory, analysis suite, sports hall, strength & conditioning suite and an all-weather 3G surface.

This course aims to prepare students for progression into a career in rugby, sport and physical education.

Potential career pathways may include Rugby/Sports Administrator, Coach/Instructor, Development Officer, Rugby Analyst, Strength and Conditioning Coach, PE Teacher or College Lecturer.

Alternative career pathways may include the emergency services, armed services and youth work.

Modules are assessed through a combination of assignments, case studies, logbooks and practical skills assessments.

This is a one year course designed for students who have achieved a Foundation Degree or 240 credits at higher education level (120 at Level 4 & 120 at Level 5) in a related discipline.

There is no additional fee, however, it is likely that you will incur additional costs for personal equipment/sports kit and for course related excursions.

This Framework aims to develop your professional skills and competence alongside your academic subject knowledge. You’ll study up to 40 credits per level throughout your programme from the Graduate Attributes Framework.  The Graduate Attribute modules are designed to enable you to develop, and evidence, a range of career-focused skills related to your subject area. These skills include digital competency, research and project management, as well as such personal competencies as communication, creativity, self-reflection, resilience and problem-solving.
