The Level 3 Apprenticeship in Energy Management is designed to equip you with the expertise needed to drive energy efficiency and sustainability in your workplace. 

With Wales positioning itself as a leader in energy management over the next 5–7 years, this qualification supports businesses in reducing costs, meeting carbon reduction targets, and embedding sustainable practices.

What you will learn

This apprenticeship comprises three mandatory elements:

  1. Agored Cymru Level 3 Diploma in Energy and Carbon Management 

Covers key topics such as energy efficiency, carbon reduction, compliance, and sustainability strategies.

  1. Essential Skills Qualifications

Level 2 Numeracy, Communication, and Digital Literacy (unless prior qualifications such as GCSEs or equivalent are held).

  1. Workplace-Based Project Work

You will apply your learning to real-life organisational challenges, contributing to tangible energy savings and sustainability improvements for your workplace.

Course units include:
Principles of Energy and Carbon Management
  • Understand industry legislation and regulations
  • Understand the economics of energy consumption, supply and demand and sustainability issues 
  • Understand how water and waste management are linked to energy management
Analysis of Energy Consumption and Carbon Emissions
  • Understand the principles of energy loss assessment
  • Be able to implement metering and measurement plans
  • Be able to undertake analysis and audits
  • Be able to make recommendations based on the outcomes of the analysis of data
Behavioural Change within the Workplace
  • Be able to communicate required behavioural changes relating to energy consumption and carbon emissions awareness
  • Be able to contribute to energy saving awareness and monitor the effectiveness of campaigns
Health and Safety in Energy Management
  • Know the laws and organisational guidelines relating to health and safety in carbon and energy management.
  • Be able to operate under a safe system of work in carbon and energy management
Energy procurement
  • Understand energy tariffs, bills and the procurement of energy
  • Be able to contribute to an organisation’s procurement strategy for energy products and services.
Energy and Carbon Project Management
  • Be able to plan energy and carbon management projects.
  • Be able to adjust and respond effectively to unexpected change and deal with contingency risks.
  • Be able to evaluate and report on the outcomes of the energy management project.
Transport Carbon Management
  • Know relevant initiatives/policies associated with transport, travel planning and logistics operational systems within the context of energy management in the workplace.
  • Be able to gather data relating to energy consumption linked to transport and logistics
Waste Management
  • Know different types of waste produced by an organisation and how this is monitored.
  • Understand legislation and national initiatives relating to waste management in an organisation.
  • Understand how waste can be used as a resource
Community Engagement
  • Understand the importance of an organisation liaising with the local community when managing energy and carbon.
  • Be able to communicate energy management and carbon measures with the local community.

Assessment methods include portfolio coursework, written and verbal questioning, work-based observations, and practical evidence. There are no traditional exams; all assessments are designed to reflect real-world scenarios.

Apprenticeships in Wales are fully funded for eligible learners. Additional costs may include optional textbooks and learning materials. Apprentices must be employed and fully supported by their employers throughout the programme. Professional membership fees are applicable and paid annually by the apprentice.

Applicants must be 16 or over and employed.

Entry requirements are flexible, with initial interviews and basic skills screeners determining the appropriate level. 

Essential Skills Qualifications in Application of Number, Communication, and Digital Literacy are required if not previously attained.
