This course will support and encourage you to progress into an exciting career in the travel and tourism industry.

Our course is a gateway into one of the fastest growing industries both locally and nationally and some students use it as a stepping-stone to a level three programme in travel and tourism which can lead to university study; others may choose alternative study pathways, an apprenticeship or full-time employment.

The course will also provide opportunities to develop a whole range of personal skills and techniques and attributes, essential for successful performance in the tourism industry and working life.

What you will learn

A central element of the course is the close partnership with the local tourism industry and internationally. You will gain a realistic view of the demands of working in the travel and tourism industry in a stimulating and exciting environment and you will explore the industry through trips to visitor attractions and tourism businesses at home and abroad.

You will also be able to put theory into practice supporting events in partnership with the local tourism industry.

This course will teach a variety of units and topics potentially including:

  • Customer service in travel and tourism
  • The UK travel and tourism industry
  • Travel and tourism destinations
  • Promotion in travel and tourism
  • UK purpose built visitor attractions
  • Hospitality in travel and tourism
  • Organising an event
  • Know about airports and airlines
  • Career planning for travel and tourism
  • UK coastal tourism
  • UK rural tourism
  • Understanding specialist tourism

You will also have the opportunity to further develop your literacy and numeracy through GCSE English or maths.

Some students use this course as a stepping-stone to a level three programme in travel and tourism; others may choose alternative further study pathways, an apprenticeship or full-time employment.

A level three qualification is also a pathway to study at university level.

All units are assessed internally using centre-devised assessments. These can include observations in work-related situations, presentations, projects, or extended writing via assignments and reports.

This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of English only.

You will need a minimum of three  GCSE grades at grades A* to C to study this course. One of these must be English, first language Welsh, or maths.

If you are progressing from a level one  program you will need a merit profile at level one to progress onto this level two program along with a reference from your personal tutor.

All students are assessed on an individual basis and will be offered the opportunity to attend an interview.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and purchase the basic kit to use if the department arranges educational visits as part of the course.
