Apprenticeship – Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (Apprenticeship Course)

An Apprenticeship is a work based learning programme at Level 3 where the learner is ‘earning while learning’. The programme is ideally suited to employees who are employed as Teaching Assistants or similar support workers who have some responsibility within their job role.

The Apprentice will be employed and receive at least the minimum apprenticeship wage. The Apprentice will attend college on an afternoon/evening and should achieve the Level 3 Apprenticeship Framework within the agreed timescale.

What you will learn

This qualification provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college  environments. It covers all aspects of  specialist support, including: planning; delivering, and

reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; special needs support; and personal development and reflective practice.

All learners will be supported by a Training Adviser/ Assessor who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis.   The Training Adviser/Assessor will liaise closely with the employer to ensure that qualifications are achieved within timescale. 

The Training Adviser/Assessor will assess the Apprentice in the workplace as and when required . Experienced, knowledgeable and supportive staff deliver college based units.

Compulsory units include:

  • Understand child and young person development;
  • understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people;
  • Promote equality;
  • diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people; support children and young people’s health and safety;
  • support learning activities. 

Example of optional units:

  • Support literacy development;
  • support numeracy development;
  • provide bilingual support for teaching and learning; support children and young people during transitions in their lives;
  • lead an extra-curricular activity;
  • lead and motivate others. 

Essential application of number skills,  essential communication skills and essential digital literacy skills are also a requirement of the framework. 

Learners can progress onto the Level 4 Certificate for the Advanced Practitioner in Schools and Colleges, a foundation degree or specialist roles within the workforce.

This qualification is an E-Portfolio based assessment through a collection of written assignments and coursework, work based observations and work based evidence. 

Entry Requirements:  Apprentices must be employed as members of the school workforce who directly support the teaching and learning of pupils in an area that requires specialist knowledge and skills. Subject to successful interview.
