Olga Andersohn-Muszynska decided to sign up for a part-time maths GCSE course at Coleg Sir Gâr where she surpassed her expectations and gained an A* grade.

Originally, Olga studied physical education at university in Poland, but her love of maths was always apparent, proved by the fact that she was helping to tutor her friends’ children and anyone who needed a little help in the area of numeracy. Because, as well as having an ability for numbers, Olga recognises that some people struggle with maths and wanted to help others.

When she moved to the UK 11 years ago, she was a stay-at-home mum but she wanted to pursue her mathematical journey in some way but although maths is a universal language, qualifications and the method of application isn’t always globally compatible.

So, Olga, a mature student, came across Coleg Sir Gâr’s maths GCSE and decided to give it a go, even though she would be learning maths in a second language.

Olga Andersohn-Muszynska said: “Aled, my tutor, was brilliant and for me, lessons were the best part of the week.

“He is literally, one of the best teachers I’ve ever had, his attitude to our studies was positive and he was very helpful.

“Sometimes I wasn’t familiar with the English version of some of the maths terminology but everything was explained.

“For me, I would say it was a form of psychotherapy as it was really good for my mental health and it was two hours a week of just concentrating on something I really enjoyed so it was very relaxing for me.

“It was also something I did for myself and to prove to myself that I could do it.”

Olga is continuing her studies with a full-time schedule at Coleg Sir Gâr and has enrolled on a further maths A-level, additional maths and a GCSE in English.
