Owain Gravell, a A-Level student at Coleg Sir Gâr recently completed a half marathon in Munich, Germany.

Owain has marked a milestone in his athletic career by completing his first official half marathon in Munich, Germany. Although he has completed half marathons in training, this was his first time participating in an official event.

The decision to run in Munich wasn’t just based on preference, Owain explained: “In the UK, you have to be 17 or older to enter a half marathon, but in Germany, the age limit is 16. Since I won’t turn 17 until next March, Munich was the perfect option.”

Owain and his father committed to an eight-week training program, which aligned perfectly with summer holidays, giving them plenty of time to focus on longer runs and build endurance for the race. Owain said: “The training was really good, it allowed us to start running when we had the time to fully commit to it.”

On race day, despite the inevitable nerves, Owain aimed to complete the marathon in under one hour and forty minutes. His dedication paid off with an impressive finish time of one hour, thirty-seven minutes and forty-one seconds - a result he was thrilled with: “I’m really happy with how it went,” Owain said with pride.

While this first half marathon wasn’t for charity, the experience has sparked a passion for future races. With the Cardiff Half marathon already on the calendar for 2025 and the Swansea Half marathon in his sights, it’s clear that Owain’s running journey has only just begun.
