ILS learners shine in football tournament, promoting confidence and team building
A group of ILS (Independent living skills) learners recently participated in a football tournament organised by Colegau Cymru. The event, which supported the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ campaign, was aimed at encouraging teamwork, confidence and personal growth.
The goal of the day focused on several key aspects: building confidence, encouraging teamwork, raising self-esteem, and promoting physical fitness. It also offered the students the opportunity to meet new people and take on new challenges, helping them to see the benefits of participating in competitions.
Helen Edwards, Head of ILS, Fresh Start, and Foundation, emphasised how vital these experiences are for the learners, stating, “Health and wellbeing and community are pillars in the ILS curriculum.
“For ILS learners to engage in tournaments and play as a team is so important. To see learners being confident enough to play in tournaments and encourage each other is an incredible accomplishment. Thank you, Kayleigh, for giving our learners this opportunity.”
This event wasn’t just about playing football; it was an essential step in the learners’ development, helping them gain confidence and experience through teamwork. As the students enjoyed themselves on the pitch, their enthusiasm for the game became evident, and many are eager to continue their journey by participating in more friendly matches with other colleges in the future.
Kayleigh Brading, Active Wellbeing Coordinator, highlighted the impact of the tournament: “This competition bridges the gap between participation and competitive sport for learners with additional needs, providing a fun and safe environment.
“It reveals a side of the learners that we don’t often see in everyday college life, offering some the chance to participate in their very first football tournament. Our learners had an amazing time, played fantastic football, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
The day was a big success, with all the students thoroughly enjoying the experience. Plans are already in motion to organise friendly matches with other colleges, allowing learners further opportunities to develop their skills and confidence.
Engagement in sports remains a vital part of the learners’ overall wellbeing and growth. This tournament helped solidify values of teamwork and perseverance, offering new ways for the students to shine both on and off the field.
