ICT services staff from local council offer students an insight into working in the IT industry
Staff from Carmarthenshire County Council’s ICT services team gave a talk to Coleg Sir Gâr computing students about their work to inspire them to think about their future careers including apprenticeships.
One of the speakers, James Fox, is a part-time student at the college and a modern apprentice at Carmarthenshire County Council.
Lynzi-Kim Reed was one of the first to talk about her role in digital services as digital transformation project officer.
She explained her work in technical delivery, working with the cyber security and digital solutions teams and what she’s currently working on, such as the new Machynys development at Pentre Awel and a theatre planner diary system.
James Fox, ICT apprentice for service delivery, explained how he arrived at his apprenticeship journey and the technologies he uses which include mobile device management solutions, active directory systems, CRM agents and Cisco Meraki systems.
He also covers technical support for schools in the county and is currently building and configuring machines for libraries as part of his role.
Alex Scott, a digital services graduate software developer, gave students an insight into working with SQL servers and explained his work in creating web applications for housing maintenance and rewriting and modernising internal metric systems as well as pursuing a post-graduate degree.
Jason Lovell, computing lecturer at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “Carmarthenshire County Council offer two apprenticeship opportunities every year so we wanted to give our students an insight into the work they do and I’d like to thank the team for their time in sharing their experiences.
“The IT industry is always developing and it’s important for colleges to keep ahead and to offer our students the best possible training and career opportunities.”
