Taking inspiration from local geology, land and sea, furniture making students at Coleg Ceredigion were tasked with the prestigious role of creating hand-made awards for the Caru Ceredigion Awards.

The awards, hosted by Ceredigion County Council, which recognise the exceptional contributions and achievements of businesses, community projects, and individuals across the county.

Students created 12 awards, one for each category, which range from innovations in the community, such as finding new uses from old buildings, through to awards recognising young entrepreneurs, successful events and the tourist industry.

The event was organised by Cynnal y Cardi under the Caru Ceredigion banner and was held at the Ysgubor at Bargoed Farm at The Moody Cow.

Furniture making students at Coleg Ceredigion are encouraged to combine their woodworking skills and creativity to create an array of items using various locally sourced timbers.

They also have access to a CNC Router, laser cutter and use various methods of hand skills such as cord weaving.

Chloe Reynolds, lecturer in furniture design and making, at Coleg Ceredigion said: “Learners pitched their ideas to the Caru Ceredigion Board, and they fed back, the result has been an evolution and culmination of a range of ideas from all the students.

“Using locally sourced timber, they took inspiration from geology, land and sea, looking at Trig Points, Carreg Bica, Devils Bridge and the coastline.

“These shapes were abstracted and represented in wood using various tools and the result is one that the board chose, which is easily repeatable for production purposes.

“Roedden ni i gyd wrth ein bodd i fod yn rhan o’r prosiect hwn.”
