A prototype design for the competition with a heart and house shapes

Coleg Ceredigion furniture making students are taking part in a live competition brief to design trophies for Gwyl Cerdd Dant Festival 2025.

The competition is open to the design and technology departments at Coleg Ceredigion, Ysgol Penweddig and Ysgol Penglais.

Competitors to make reference to the local area and to its musical tradition as well as keeping each unit to a specific cost.

The successful organisation will need to create 55 trophies which will be presented on the festival stage in October next year.

Deborah Elsaesser, lecturer in furniture design and making said: “Students have been looking at the local area for inspiration, from landmarks to landscapes.

“They’ve been looking at nature, particularly starling murmuration, musical culture, Welsh folk law such as the petrified forest of Borth and the legend of the lost city, Cantre’r Gwaelod.

“Ceredigion is rich in materials so learners are exploring Local ash, which is sadly changing our landscape due to the Ash Die Back disease and ebonising and scorching Oak to blacken as well as slate and copper.”
