Exploring psychology at university through the college’s Medical Field Programme

A-Level students with an interest in the healthcare sector, got an insight into studying psychology with a visit to Swansea University, as part of the college’s Medical Field Programme partnership.
Led by Swansea University’s Dr Kyle Jones, the session included an awareness of the importance of scientific research, psychological theory and application.
It also delved into the various areas of clinical research and occupational psychology including cyber psychology, military and dementia.
As part of a university research programme, students also got involved in a Stroop Test which is a psychological test that measures cognitive flexibility and processing speed.
University representatives also gave the group an insight into the degree programmes available and what kind of research they could specialise in as well as inviting them to an optional residential summer programme.
The Medical Field Programme, in partnership with Swansea University, is aimed at students who want to explore outside of the traditional doctor role and look at careers including biochemistry, psychology, audiology, genetics, radiography and theatre.
Dr Susan Ford, a chemistry lecturer who is leading this programme at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “This visit, which is our third visit to the university this year, provided an invaluable opportunity for students to experience psychology in a university setting.
“Gaining a hands-on insight into the subject and its related careers and educational pathways as well as engaging with academic experts is a huge benefit of this programme and for our students.”
