Coleg Sir Gâr and New College Oxford will soon be teaming up as part of the college’s successful application to become part of the university’s Step-Up Programme.

The programme supports A-level students in their academic progression with visits to and from University of Oxford, working with current university students and their outreach team.

Coleg Sir Gâr is one of only 40 schools and colleges to be included in the UK-wide programme where students will benefit from advice and support in tackling tasks such as entrance tests, applications and interview techniques.

This partnership will start during the first term of college in September meaning that More Able and Talented (MAT) students will benefit as soon as they start college and this will continue every year.

Angharad Mansfield, lecturer in history and sociology and head of section for AS students at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “The aim of this partnership is ultimately to help students recognise that Oxford and other high achieving universities are achievable, and to support that, there will be a residential visit to New College Oxford and other supporting activities throughout the year.

“A lot of our students already leave college and study at Russell Group universities to study degrees such as economics, aeronautical engineering, law and medicine but this programme will add even more value to students and to what we offer in our A-level provision.

“We are really proud to be involved and we are thrilled that our students will benefit and be inspired.”

The college’s A-level results have been consistently high over a number of years with notable subject performances last year including biology, mathematics, further mathematics, physics and sociology with modern foreign languages achieving a 100% A*-A pass rate.
