Coleg Sir Gȃr students gain prestigious awards at the Royal Welsh Agricultural show 2024
Two students from Coleg Sir Gȃr, Gelli Aur campus, have won prestigious awards at this year’s Royal Welsh show.
Each year the Royal Welsh Agricultural society presents promising students and rising stars with awards that recognise and pays tribute to their enthusiasm and dedication to Welsh agriculture.
The Gwili Jones award, includes an educational bursary, recognises the importance of supporting students who are entering the agricultural engineering industry through facilitating a one-week work placement with a leading manufacturer within the sector.
Rhys Jones, who is studying level three agriculture engineering extended diploma has been awarded the Gwili Jones. Rhys currently works for Amaeth Cothi, an agricultural engineering company that repairs and sells case IH tractors as well as assisting his grandmother on the family farm.
He is currently completing his course and is then intending to further his studies in agriculture engineering at Harper Adams university. Additionally, Rhys has secured a placement at Bomford Turner, a manufacturer of hedge cutters and grass cutting equipment based in Evesham.
The annual student of the year award is open to students who have completed NVQ level three or the BTEC diploma courses in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, animal nursing, horse management and countryside management courses.
This year the RWAS student of the year was awarded to agriculture student, Ela Harries.
Ela has just completed Level 3 Agriculture at Gelli Aur and is hopeful about attending university this September. Ela said “It’s really important for young people to be recognised, the award has opened doors for me and showed me what’s out there and what young people can achieve in agriculture.”
