Coleg Sir Gâr celebrates student achievements in A-Level and Access awards
An awards event has been held at Coleg Sir Gâr to recognise the academic and personal achievement of students who followed A-level and access programmes to accomplish their future career goals of studying at university, gaining a higher apprenticeship or going into employment.
These high achieving, successful students were invited back to receive their awards in various A-level subject areas such as law, further maths and geography.
Access to higher education students were recognised for their transformational journeys such as Summer Cheriton-Mason who was home-schooled and didn’t enter formal education until she was 17.
Summer followed her passion for literature, inspired by the likes of Tolkien and after attending an open evening, she began her college journey, travelling a 60-mile round trip, three days a week using public transport.
She achieved 39 university credits at distinction level and is now studying English literature and creative writing at Hertfordshire University.
Fellow Access student Heledd Hunt was also awarded Prize for Outstanding Effort after achieving 36 university credits at distinction level and is now studying a primary education degree at UWTSD.
Chelsea Gleeson also achieved the Prize for Outstanding Effort award and is going to study paramedic science after taking a year out.
Former A-level award-winning students who began university this year following their A-level results included Ben Davies, who achieved one A* grade and three As to study physics at Bristol and Ryan Davies who achieved five A* grades over three years.
Alice Bird won an award for her commitment and achievement in gaining four A* grades at A-level to study psychology in education at York, Gwenny Radford also won an outstanding academic achievement award and is now studying at London Interdisciplinary School.
Angharad Mansfield, head of Sir Gâr 6, which is Coleg Sir Gâr’s sixth form brand, said: “It was lovely to see everyone again and knowing they are succeeding in their chosen paths.
“This will always be their college and we encourage students to keep in touch as they are the inspiration for current and future students.”
Jeremy Edwards, lecturer in law and Access added: “It is a huge step for adult learners to return to education and it’s really lovely seeing them now after successfully completing their diplomas and having juggled their studies with family and work commitments.”
Dr Andrew Cornish, college principal closed the event recognising the efforts of students, parents and teachers in mentoring students through triumphs and challenges and outlining their personal achievements beyond the classroom.
