Guto Rogers and Twm Jones with Gold medals

Two talented students from Coleg Ceredigion’s Cardigan Campus have achieved remarkable success at the Skills Competition Wales final held in Swansea, winning Gold Medals in their respective categories.

Twm Jones, who won Gold in Site Carpentry, said: “I’m incredibly grateful and humbled to have won the Gold Medal in the Site Carpentry competition. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my employer and the college. I feel that my confidence has grown significantly since taking part in skills competitions, and having the time to practice and improve my skills while in college helped a lot. My experience as an apprentice has provided the resilience required to take part in a high-pressure environment for five hours. I’m bursting with pride to have won the Gold Medal.”

Guto Rogers, the Gold Medal winner in Bench Joinery, shared: “Third time’s the charm! After three years of hard work and persistence, winning Gold in Joinery is a dream come true. I was able to confidently complete the required task to a high standard and was able to enjoy the whole five-hour competition experience. I’m extremely grateful to my employer and to the college for their support. My whole family was super proud that I won the Gold Medal, and I’ll never forget the competition journey and always look back with pride.”

This event was the culmination of all the Skills Competition Wales events that have taken part across Wales which tests students’ skills in various sectors, from culinary arts to accountancy and construction to personal fitness training.

Organised by Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales, the event presented gold, silver and bronze awards to students across Wales and for those who could not attend, a number of watch parties followed the live event.

Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales lead the Welsh Government-funded protect and competitions to ensure that every student and apprentice in Wales are supported through their competition journey.

These competitions lead to being involved with WorldSkills UK where some students have the opportunity of competing to become part of the UK squads and teams, ultimately working towards competing internationally.
