Coleg Ceredigion art and design students learn sustainable fabric dyeing with artist Zoe Quick
Earlier this term, UAL and Foundation Art and Design students at Coleg Ceredigion had the unique opportunity to take part in a hands-on masterclass with artist Zoe Quick. Known for her work in natural fabric dyeing, Zoe shared her expertise in sustainable textile practices, giving students a first hand experience of working with eco-friendly materials.
The workshop focused on using natural resources to create beautiful, sustainable fabric dyes. In preparation for the session, students foraged local materials such as acorns, fennel flowers and blackberries.
These materials were then used in a process called “cloth bundling” where the fabric is wrapped with the plant matter and subjected to a boiling process to release the natural dyes.
Through Zoe’s guidance, students explored the art of natural dyeing while learning about its environmental benefits. Not only did they discover the vibrant and earthy hues that can be achieved through sustainable methods, but also deepened their understanding of how to incorporate eco-friendly practices into their future projects.
The workshop was a success, with students producing stunning, naturally-dyed fabrics that highlighted the beauty of working with natural materials. The results showcase impressive colours and textures created during the masterclass, as well as glimpses of the process.
Zoe’s masterclass equipped students with practical skills, with encouragement of critical thinking about sustainability in their own artistic practices. Students left inspired, remembering the importance of considering the environmental impact of their work and how they may contribute to a more sustainable future in the creative industries.
