How to choose your college courses
Introduction
Making decisions about your subjects or type of qualifications can feel overwhelming, especially when it feels like your choices now could influence your future. But don’t worry, this page is designed to help you break down the process and make it as stress free as possible.
Go through the questions below, browse the courses on our site and maybe even book in for an open day so you can see what college will be like.
And most importantly remember this – Choosing your college courses doesn’t mean you’re choosing your future forever. It’s great if you know the path you want to go down, but If you’re not sure what you want to do as a career yet, or you change your mind whilst you’re studying, it’s okay.
If you come to college and make the most out of the experience, you’ll gain so much more than grades. As well as the transferable skills you gain from education like problem solving, researching, time management and team work, you’ll also gain valuable life experiences, increase your confidence and resilience and boost your people skills.
And if ever you need help, just talk to staff at the college, whether it’s a lecturer, the wellbeing team or a careers advisor, we want you to succeed and be happy whilst you do so.
What do you like doing?
What topics could you talk about forever? Are there any hobbies you want to gain a deeper understanding of? Is there something you’ve always dreamed of achieving?
Ask yourself what you’re passionate about and see if there are any courses that match up with what you’re already interested in. It’ll be much easier to apply yourself to something you enjoy, so that’s a good place to start.
How do you learn best?
Do you love lectures, reading or researching? Are you a more practical, hands on person? Would learning on the job suit you better?
At Coleg Sir Gâr and Ceredigion, you have a variety of options when it comes to the type of qualification you can apply for. Ask yourself where you feel most confident absorbing information and see if there’s a type of course that would suit you best.
- A-Levels give you the opportunity to study a number of different subjects at once, your learning will be mostly classroom based and you’ll be assessed on course work and exam results.
- Vocational courses prepare you for a chosen career. They combine a mixture of theory and practical learning and may include some work experience.
- Apprenticeships are a way to earn money whilst also earning qualifications. You’ll learn on the job, with one day a week of college to back it up.
What will you do after college?
Do you have a dream job or industry in mind? Have you set your heart on university? Will you start your own business?
Think about your future aspirations and bear in mind that some courses or careers will require specific qualifications. If you already know what you want to do, do a bit of research and choose a course that compliments your goals and will help you achieve them. If you’re unsure, choose something that you’re interested in that will give you transferable skills to help you keep your options open.
Get some advice and come to an open day
Don’t hesitate to reach out to teachers, family, or older students who’ve been there, done that. They can share their wisdom and help you make informed choices.
An open day is a great opportunity to come and tour our facilities and ask any questions you might have about courses or college life. There will be plenty of people to talk to, including tutors, student ambassadors, wellbeing staff and the admissions team – whatever you need to know, someone will be around to help you.
We have multiple open days throughout the year, so check out when the next one is and save the date.
Whatever options you choose, know that Coleg Sir Gâr and Ceredigion is a safe place to learn about yourself, as well as your chosen subjects. We look forward to meeting you and helping you settle into college life so you’re confident to tackle whatever happens next.
