Engineering and computing students at Coleg Sir Gâr have taken part in an overseas educational visit to Croatia where they visited the biggest skills competition in southeast Europe.

Students had the opportunity of visiting the WorldSkills Croatia national competition where they experienced various engineering and computing practices carried out in a professional and competitive environment and learnt how these high-quality skills are valued worldwide.

The eight-day trip included three days spent in Zagreb and four days in Opatija, providing a balanced mix of educational and cultural activities.

The purpose of the visit was to inspire students and build their confidence to show them the value of high-quality vocational skills to help them aspire further in their education and career choices.

They also took part in practical activities relating to engineering and computing where they could speak with industry professionals.

Students were also given the opportunity to explore the cultural differences between Croatia and Wales and toured the historical Opatija villas and Lungomare promenade as well as a walking tour of central Zagreb, including landmarks such as Ban Jelačić Square, Zagreb Cathedral, and the upper town.

The visit was funded by the Turing Scheme which is the UK’s global programme for studying, working and living abroad, offering once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for personal and professional development for students.

Mechanical engineering student, Joshua Brown, said: “The trip was outstanding, I enjoyed absolutely every second of it and it’s definitely given me a taste for travel.

“The sights and architecture were beautiful and we got to see CNC machinists in action at the live competition.

“It was great to spend some quality time with our own students, sample local dishes and learn about another culture.

“The experience has definitely changed some of the more nervous or shy students, you can absolutely see they are far more confident in themselves coming back.”

Coleg Sir Gâr engineering lecturer, Karl Hilton said: “Observing the national skills competition in Zagreb provided learners with an insight into the skill levels and standards required to compete at a high level.

“Interacting with Croatian students, professionals and competition participants provided networking opportunities, potentially leading to them entering future competitions.

“Spending time in both Zagreb and the coastal town of Opatija has helped the learners appreciate the cultural diversity within Croatia, enhancing their adaptability and intercultural communication skills.

“Hopefully, this will inspire them to improve their own competencies and drive them to strive for excellence.”
